Daniel Hamin Go Dr. Reiko Fueting Beethoven String Quartet 11 May 2016 String Quartets by Beethoven One could argue that Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets are one of the most significant collection of compositions in the history of classical music. These works range from the very beginning of his career, to the very end of his life, and therefore are labeled as: early (op. 18), middle (op. 59, 74, 95), and late (op. 127, 130, 131, 132, grosse fuge, 135) quartets. This essay will examine all sixteen of Beethoven’s early, middle, and late string quartets, exploring aspects such as form, style, and harmony, as well as analysing structures and phrases. Furthermore, it will be comparing the similarities and differences among the quartets and determining the culminated evolution within Beethoven’s string quartets. The string quartet as we know it today, all began with the Austrian born composer, Franz Joseph Haydn’s Opus 1; a very divertimento like piece, with the viola and cello playing near-identical parts. This was further developed into its current form and many consider the Opus 33 to be the true evolution of quartet writing. Since Haydn’s time, the string quartet is considered to be an illustrious form that â€Å"represents one of the true tests of the composer s art.† Haydn lived from 1732-1809 and composed 60 string quartets over a 50-year span.
